SHEPHERDS NEST/BRIDGES TO HOPE
My name is Dea Alexander, known to all as "Mama Dea." Since early childhood, I have had a strong
conviction to assist those who are in need because of my deep compassion for people. I was drawn into
the medical field, obtained my degree as an L.V.N. at Los Angeles School of Nursing.
After working for 25 years as a nurse, I was forced into retirement because of a severe back injury.
However, I continued to work as a private nurse for the terminally ill and the elderly.
In the 1970's, I served on the Board of Directors, with East Valley Community Services in Sun Valley,
California. In addition an unemployment service for the youth and I started Operation Cover Up, known as
the Buster. I also worked with non-profit organizations throughout the San Fernando Valley, coordinating
camping trips for the youth and shelter programs. I was committed to doing whatever it took to stop the
alarming trend of recycling the homeless and visibly abused and neglected children.
